HPC's Employee Award Recipients Health Providers Choice is pleased to announce its choice for the Nurse Excellence Award on August 1, 2005. We are pleased to have exceptional nurses like Nurse Burbank on our team. As an ambassador of the nursing profession and a patient care advocate, Nurse Burbank has been an exemplar partner of Health Providers Choice for the past year.
When Roderick Burbank at age 32, was laid off from General Motors he knew he had to make a new life/living for himself. Mr. Burbank's mother, the late Naomi Edwards was a nurse and he had always admired her ability to provide for her family as a single parent of 6 children. Roderick decided he would go to school for nursing as an LPN. Driving Limos on the weekends, singing at funerals and even sometimes driving a hearse for a prominent funeral home was only a few of the jobs he held while trying to complete school. As tough as it was, trying to support his family (3 children - Stephanie, Tonya and Rod Jr.,) while in school and taking on odd jobs to make ends meet, Burbank was determined to keep going. Burbank also encountered another of life's obstacles as his first marriage ended in divorce which sent him into an emotional downward spiral. Mr. Burbank is quick to acknowledge it was his trust in the Lord who sustained him during this very difficult time.
Roderick later met and married the love of his life, Auretha Childress. Not only did Burbank begin a new career, he became a father again (twice over). With two small children Evan, now 12 and Erin 9 and wife Auretha (now of 14 years) by his side, Burbank became even more determined, and motivated to go back to school for his RN.
After several years as an RN, Mr. Burbank was experiencing situations, where he (as did other fellow nurses) felt a need for some kind of device to aid some of the male stroke patients and those with prostate problems. Too many accidents and calls for hospital clean up staff drove Mr. Burbank to brainstorm the device he now has a patent on called the Urinal Splash Guard. This disposable device attaches to the toilet with small tabs and prevents urine spills and time consuming clean-ups for staff. Although the road to success has not been an easy one, it was a worthwhile journey for Nurse Burbank. Still aiming, still stretching, still reaching for something new, Burbank is always searching for a new challenge in nursing. His experience ranges from home health aid to critical care to utilization review coordinator and industrial nursing. He is currently on staff with HCP which he has mastered a new skill called Genesis Power Charting System. He also remains faithful to Detroit Receiving Hospital where he has worked for the past four years and occasionally is able to give Daimler Chrysler some weekends from time to time. On top of all this Nurse Burbank is active in his church at Greater Grace Temple where he sings.. and of course is on the Medical Emergency Response Team. |
